"Verity" Book Review

July 24, 2023

As an avid romance reader, and someone who is new to the mystery genre (but loves it), this book is pretty fitting for me. "Verity" is a romantic thriller, written by Colleen Hoover.

I keep being surprised by the Colleen Hoover books I read, because I expect them to be straight up romances, but "It Ends With Us" and "Verity" were not that.

"Verity" is about an author named Lowen Ashleigh who is no stranger to loss and pain and is in a tight financial spot. She meets Jeremy Crawford one day on her way to a meeting, after witnessing a man get hit by a car, only to discover her meeting was with Jeremy. In the meeting, she reluctantly agrees to take over writing the best seller series by Jeremy's wife, Verity Crawford, due to Verity's poor medical condition.

While at the Crawford residence to do research for the books Lowen will write, she discovers an extremely disturbing manuscript unrelated to the series she will write. Although it's obvious snooping, Lowen can't help but read it all and discover the scary truth of Verity.

The reason I rated this novel 4 stars rather than 5 is because in my opinion, the romance was bad. It is kind of out of the blue, and Jeremy is in fact a married man. The reason I find it out of the blue is because Jeremy shows very little interest from what I could see and then all of a sudden they hook up. I dunno, it was weird to me.

However, the thriller aspect of the novel was amazing. I couldn't wait for Lowen to read more of the manuscript every time she put it down, and the END. As I was reading the last chapter, I genuinely gasped and slapped my hand to my mouth.

Anyways, I think this a great book for anyone looking for a thriller to keep you on the edge of your seat, but if you're looking for a romance, this is not the way to go.
