"Kill Joy" Book Review

July 24, 2023

One of my favorite series, the "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" series, has a prequel, "Kill Joy"! Since I didn't include this prequel in my series review, I thought I'd do a quick review of it separately.

The premise of this novella is that Pip is going to her friend Connor's birthday party, which has a murder mystery theme. This book is super interesting to read because it shows what Pip was like before she became obsessed with solving murders. And, honestly, she was just obsessed with something else - school. It's nice to see her in a less dark headspace than she was in for the third book, but it's also intriguing to see what led her to want to solve all these cases.

It's almost comical that Pip became the teenage detective she is because of a murder mystery party, but it's clear to the reader that this party and this case that is completely fictional means so much more to Pip than it does to her friends. I liked the ending, and how the reader can see exactly when she decided she would focus on the Andie Bell case, and I loved Ravi's quick little cameo.

So, I think "Kill Joy" is good for what it's meant to be, which is a prequel to explain what led Pip towards her obsession, but it wasn't anything amazing. However, I do think it's worth the easy read if you love the series as much as I do.
